Section 3 - Positions Explained
Player Positions
Every team in outdoor polo has four players, numbered 1 through 4. Each number corresponds to a role on the field:
Number 1 (Attack)
- Plays forward, closest to the opponent’s goal.
- Primary role is to score goals.
- Also pressures the opposing defenders.
Number 2 (Attack Support)
- A versatile role, both attacking and defending.
- Works closely with Number 1 to create scoring chances.
- Often marks the opposing Number 3 (the playmaker).
Number 3 (Playmaker)
- Usually the most experienced or highest-handicapped player.
- Controls the game’s rhythm, distributes passes, and organises team tactics.
- Similar to a quarterback or midfielder in other sports.
Number 4 (Defence/Back)
- The last line of defence.
- Marks the opposing Number 1 and clears the ball away from danger.
- Strong defensive skills and long hitting ability are essential.
