Section 3 - Positions Explained

Player Positions

Every team in outdoor polo has four players, numbered 1 through 4. Each number corresponds to a role on the field:

Number 1 (Attack)

  • Plays forward, closest to the opponent’s goal.
  • Primary role is to score goals.
  • Also pressures the opposing defenders.

Number 2 (Attack Support)

  • A versatile role, both attacking and defending.
  • Works closely with Number 1 to create scoring chances.
  • Often marks the opposing Number 3 (the playmaker).

Number 3 (Playmaker)

  • Usually the most experienced or highest-handicapped player.
  • Controls the game’s rhythm, distributes passes, and organises team tactics.
  • Similar to a quarterback or midfielder in other sports.

Number 4 (Defence/Back)

  • The last line of defence.
  • Marks the opposing Number 1 and clears the ball away from danger.
  • Strong defensive skills and long hitting ability are essential.
